Between 1870 and 1890, the artist Odilon Redon created mostly black and grey works, first in charcoal and then as monochromatic lithographs. These compositions, which he named his “noirs,” explored the strange, sublime, and fantastical. They were also inspired by literary works, including those of Edgar Allen Poe and Charles Baudelaire. In 1882, Redon published a series of works titled “To Edgar Allan Poe” that depict imaginative visual worlds seemingly lifted from Poe’s mysterious prose.
